New Year’s resolutions are in full force: Every cardio machine at the gym is monopolized and we’re constantly being inundated with the newest way to lose the most weight in the least amount of time. With so many options readily available to us, why does getting in shape seem so difficult?
This year, it doesn’t have to be, because we’ve uncovered the best activity to help you get in shape in 2017.
What could that activity be? It’s our favorite sport, of course – pickleball! Once you learn how to play, you’ll be able to reap its many health benefits.
Here are three ways that pickleball can help you get in shape for the New Year and the years to come!
It’s a low-impact sport.
As we age, we become more and more conscious of the fact that our bodies might not be working like they did when we were younger. But that’s no reason to throw in the towel and put your health and wellbeing on the back burner! Pickleball is a fantastic low-impact sports option. Since a pickleball court is about half the size of a tennis court, this helps reduce the amount of running and the quick direction changes that can often lead to aches and pains in other aches and pains. Don’t be fooled though: Just because it’s a low-impact sport, that doesn’t mean it’s not challenging!
It’s a mood booster.
The connection between mood and exercise is very strong. When we exercise, our bodies release powerful chemicals called endorphins that give us a surge of energy and positive emotions. While exercise alone can create these feel-good moments, if you pair that with friendly competition and camaraderie, you’re well on your way to giving your mood and mental health an even bigger boost. This is exactly what pickleball can do for you! Not only will you be reaping the physical benefits of this sport, you’ll benefit from the mental aspects, too. All in all, pickleball is a friendly game that promotes sportsmanship and fun competition and boosts your mood at the same time!
It’s a fun way to exercise.
There’s usually a sigh or a sense of despair when a person says that they have to work out. But why does fitness have to be a chore? Why can’t it be fun? Luckily for pickleball players, they’re burning calories and boosting their cardiovascular health by hitting the courts. Pickleball is a mixture of badminton and tennis (you can read more about the history here), so this means you’ll be moving around and using your whole body to make a play. Your arms, core and legs will all be engaged during a match, which translates to a higher calorie burn. Paired with a healthy diet, regular pickleball playing can even lead to weight loss. In fact, if you play pickleball for an hour, you can burn up to 600 calories! But, beyond a great calorie burn, you’ll be having fun and not even realizing you’re working out—that’s a win-win in our book!
So if your goal is to get into shape for 2017, why not give pickleball a try?
